In need of Pet Names for Girlfriend?

Did you know that having a special pet name for your girlfriend can actually bond the two of you closer together? We’ll talk more about that shortly.

text reads "pet names for girlfriend" and shows a couple smiling at each other.

But for now, let us ask you, do you have a pet name between the two of you? If not, it might be time to come up with one! Let’s talk about why.

Why are Pet Names Important In a Relationship?

It might seem simple, and maybe even a little bit silly, but pet names can actually help to bond you and your girlfriend closer together. How? Pet names are a great way to show your affection towards one another.

Not only that, but they are something that just the two of you share. You can think of it as a “marker” of your relationship. It’s between just the two of you and no one else. And that’s special!

Pet names can also be used as a form of communication. Imagine the two of you have been in an argument and you’re feeling upset.

Your partner can help to reassure you (or you can reassure your partner) that the two of you are going to be ok simply by calling them by their pet name.

Rules when Choosing a Nickname

Essentially, you can choose anything you want to be a pet name. But to prevent yourself from sleeping in the dog house, we have a few simple rules you might want to follow:

Never Call Your Girlfriend the Same Pet Name as a Past Girlfriend

If you’ve had a pet name for a previous girlfriend, please do yourself a favor and choose your new girlfriend a new pet name. We promise –  using the same pet name that you used to use in a previous relationship will not go well for you.

Don’t Use Her Nickname for Anyone Else

A pet name is something that you and your partner should share between each other – that’s what makes it special. Save yourself an argument and never use this pet name on someone else. Save it for your girlfriend and your girlfriend only.

Make It Sweet

The pet name you use for your girlfriend should be one that she finds sweet and enduring. Don’t use a pet name that she doesn’t like – that can actually hurt your relationship. Find one you both think is cute, and go with that.

Choose Something that will Stick

Don’t choose a name that you will get bored of or that will pass with time. Choose a pet name that will stick for the years to come  – just like your relationship (we hope).

Choose Something You can Call her Anywhere

A Nickname like “Sweet thing” might be okay in your own home, but popping that one out at a family dinner might not have the same effect.

So while it’s okay to have a few different nicknames to use in different scenarios, we suggest choosing one you can use anywhere for the name go-to.

How to Choose the Right Nickname?

Choose a nickname based on your girlfriend’s personality traits. For example, if she’s sweet, you might call her sweetie or sweetheart. If she likes to be treated like royalty, you could call her princess or queen.

And so on and so forth. The nickname that you choose for her should convey how much she means to you, so make sure it demonstrates that.

Of course, the best way to choose a nickname is to let it come naturally. If a nickname naturally comes to you after you had an experience together, or watch a particular movie together, great! If not, we have some potential nicknames that you might like:

Why are there so many food Nicknames?

As you probably noticed, there’s a lot of nicknames above that revolve around food. We’re not 100% sure why that is, but we have a theory – it’s because we love food so much!

And most often, these nicknames are based around foods that are sweet or delicious. So when we call our significant other a food related nickname, it’s like telling them they are sweet – and we love them!

Why are there so many animal nicknames?

Probably for the same reason there are so many food nicknames. We love animals. They are sweet and cute! So when we refer to our significant others by an animal nickname, we’re relaying the message that we think they’re sweet and cute too.

Can we call each other the same nickname?

Sure, why not? If it works for you – we say go for it! We’ve heard lots of couples call each other by the same nickname. Babe, for example, is a common nickname among couples.

The girlfriend might call the boyfriend babe, and visa versa – and we see no problem with that whatsoever!

Should I talk to my girlfriend about a nickname?

It depends on the situation. The best nicknames are the ones that occur naturally. Maybe one day you say, “your eyes are like sunshine on a rainy day.” From then on, a good nickname could be sunshine.

But if you don’t have a nickname that seems to be occurring naturally, maybe you could say something like, “I really want a nickname that we can share between the two of us, but I can’t come up with anything. Do you have any ideas?” And see where the conversation flows.

There’s lots of different nicknames out there. Make sure you choose one that is flattering and that fits her personality. The wrong nickname can cause a lot of chaos in a relationship, so be sure to choose one she will like.
